Events for 2004
Voter Registration Blitz, Fall Quarter- This effort is focused entirely on registering the young voting population of UCLA to vote in the 2004 election with the help of the Bruin Republicans and CALPIRG. The registration of college-age voters is designed to empower the voice of students in general, and to give students a stronger voice in the public policy debate, enabling a serious consideration of many progressive ideas.
Dukakis Dinner, Winter Quarter - The dinner is a gathering between former presidential candidate Michael Dukakis and the members of the Bruin Democrats. That night, we will go to a local Greek restaurant, and Dukakis will give members of the club a background on his life, his accomplishments, and his thoughts on any number of pertinent current events.
Bruin Democrats Gala, Spring Quarter - This event is a formal night of local Democratic networking. Held in the Kerckhoff Grand Salon, this shirt-and-tie event will feature prominent Democrats from the Los Angeles area, including local politicians, as well as prominent democratic activists. The highlight of the night will be an auction, auctioning off donated political memorabilia. This event will bring back many alumni of UCLA, of which there are many, to come back to advise and interact with current UCLA students.
Youth Political Outreach Tour, Spring Quarter - The tour is a series of classroom presentations by the Bruin Democrats in conjunction with the Bruin Republicans. These presentations will be about politics, political involvement, current events, and the importance of staying politically involved, even at a basal level. Club members will be able to share personal experiences that they have received because of political involvement at a youth level, such as interning in Washington, D.C., lobbying prominent politicians, and influencing policy. Our current goal is to talk to at least 10 classrooms, and thereby 300 high school students.
Bruin Democrats & Bruin Republicans Debate, Quarterly- The Bruin Democrats have squared off with the Bruin Republicans on issues such as Iraq, foreign policy, education, affirmative action, and tax cuts. These debates are a perennial favorite of members on both sides. Although debate is always heated, civility is always maintained. This provides a forum for healthy discussion on many important issues to students on campus. The debates are especially powerful in educating students because of the interactive portion of the debate where students in the audience are allowed to ask questions to both sides.
